"You can't look at the competition and say you're going to do it better. You have to look at the competition and say you're going to do it differently." -Steve Jobs
When I started this business all I wanted to do is things differently. I was looking around wondering if there was such thing as customer service anymore? Do we care about each other? I started a business doing things I knew I was good at, and I made sure I did offer excellent customer service. Unfortunately, I started looking to the left and right, and I quickly started focusing on how to over come my competition. This behavior started when I lost one client to a competitor who only cared about money and control. I didn't understand how this happened! Then I was constantly asked what separated me from my competition? I couldn't answer the question! We all do computer repair, we all try to help the customer the best way we know how, and the similarities go on. So then I started competing, trying to find my place among the competition. After that, everything else is history. Last year turned out to be my worst year yet, and I've only been in business for 3 and 1/2 years!
I came across this quote by Steve Jobs and started to think. What is it that I do? Why am I in business? What are my long term goals? This year I have been working hard to restructure my business. Number one, we are not in business to compete with anyone! When you do things differently there is no one to compete with. Number two, we are going to make sure we provide customer service like no one else! We will set the example. Chick-fil-A has been copied many times with their "My Pleasure" attitude. They did it differently and so will Ultimate Computer. Two things I have changed recently to make sure this is a reality, I have hired a in-house technician and an office manager. Jeff is assisting me with the computers that come into the office so I can focus on onsite jobs. Sheryl is helping me with making sure the office runs smoother and more efficient while I focus on advancements. Speaking of advancements, the third thing we are going to do different is to be more creative. We are still doing computer repair; however, we will also begin innovating. As we move deeper into a world of technology, there is always room for improvement and advancement. In a nut shell, Ultimate Computer will now and forever be an out-side the box company!
I am always looking for feedback. Good, bad, indifferent, I want to hear it all. This is the only way a company can grow for the better! A person or company can not grow properly with only positive feed back, they need the hurtful truth as well. So, please tell us what you think, and be honest. Help us be different!
